I love a good pun, be it visual or verbal. And these state illustrations by Frank Chimero are no exception. He currently has illustrated 17 different states that are just fantastic. To me, his illustrations mix the feeling of traditional paint on paper with the crispness of vector shapes. And at $20 a pop, you can’t go wrong.

AUTUMN ADORNMENTS for your hair
I love cute bobbypins. Something with a little flair that will keep the bangs out of my eyes. WHich is why I love these little hair clips from 4 the sparrows nest. They come in a variety of different finishes, there is even one with a little bit of moss on it. Whether you are into antlers, branches, or just something thats a bit more fun than the standard goody brand bobby pin, there is bound to be something that catches your eye in this shop.

COOL PACKAGING for cold beer
After living in New York for the last 6 years, everything seems less expensive when I go to my hometown in Delaware. We stopped by Atlantic Liquors in Rehoboth Beach to pick up a case of Dogfishhead IPA to bring home with us. While we were there we spotted a sampler pack of beers from the Great Divide Brewing Company, based out of Denver, CO. I know your not supposed to judge a book, or beer, by it’s cover, but this packaging just jumped off the shelf. So we decided to grab that along with our ol’ favorites. I just put a few in the fridge to enjoy tonight after work and I can’t wait to see if it tastes as crisp and cool as the design on the labels.

HI WE’RE IN Delaware
Well actually we are still in Brooklyn but will be traveling to the great state of Delaware later today. I will be selling my peppersprout line at the Lewes Historical Society Craft Fair on Saturday (or Sunday if it rains). I’m actually from Lewes originally, GO VIKINGS!, so it will be interesting to see who I run into this weekend. One of my favorite parts of course is the beach. I really miss living near swimmable water, and hope to very soon be moving a little closer to the ocean. Also looking forward to having some amazing handmade icecream from Kings Ice Cream, and probably a Blizzard from DQ. I worked at the DQ in higschool where we came up with a multitude of blizzard flavors that are not on the menu. Some of them good (Whoppers with Chocolate Dip) and some of them not so great (pickles and pretzels). So if for some odd reason you are in Lewes, Delaware this weekend stop by and say hi!

UP-CYCLING done right
A graphic designers up-cycling dreams have come true. I used to work in a photolab and we had these huge printers that took extra large ink cartridges. Im talking HUGE like 7 feet wide at least. I used to love printing giant posters and banners and the occasional sticker on it, but the fact that we didn’t recycle the cartridges always made me a little annoyed. But have no fear, boxlightbox is here. They have found the perfect use for used large format ink cartridges, LAMPS! I think these would be an awesome gift for the designer or even print production manager in your life.

I’M DREAMING of a white christmas
Yes I’m already thinking about the holidays. Christmas is my all time favorite holiday. I love wrapping. I love shopping for other people. I love decorating the tree, last year was actually the first year i have had a tree in quite sometime and I have to say it was so nice to come home to the smell of pine. This year however we will remember to take it out before we go away for a week so it doesn’t become all brittle and poke us in the arms on it’s descent down the 2 flights of carpeted stairs to its place on the curb for recycling. Long story short, I have been designing some ornaments for the holidays and I have the first ones in my hands. They will be up in the shop very shortly, but I wanted to give you guys a sneak peek at them before I get around to taking better photos of them. Bundle up!

SKETCH LIKE A PRO or at least try
SInce the dawn of the internet, I have always loved those sites where you can sketch or doodle or be artistic in any-wich-way. Well there is a new site out there that blows them all out of the water. Odosketch by odopod. This flash based drawing site has the most realistic drawing mediums i have ever seen. It actually feels like you are drawing with pastels or watercolors. I also love that the background isn’t a plain white box, it’s a beautiful paper texture which makes everything pop a little more. I played around with it a bit this morning, and have to say I will definitely be back, a lot. So I hope you enjoy this little robot I sketched this morning, and then go sketch your own picture and enjoy the amazing work in the gallery.

Hate dishpan hands? Hate harmful abrasives? Well say hello to these wonderful kitchen scrubbing cloths from designer Hiroki Hayashi. Part of the Goodbye detergent collection, these scrubbing utensils are made from recycled corncobs, and peachpits. The natural abrasives in these materials don’t require any additional detergent, however you can feel free to use a bit of soap if you want. Available currently at the Cooper-Hewitt design shop. You can also find out about the entire line at the LEC International site.
