LOTS OF LOVE in tiny envelopes

Who ever said its the small things in life that matter most, might have been talking about the World’s smallest postal service. Run by the wondrous Lea Redmond out of San Francisco, the Worlds Smallest Postal Service (WSPS) is a teeny tiny transcription service. She sets up her miniature desk all over the Bay Area, and is also now offering online orders. You can write a letter to whoever you want, and Lea transcribes them onto tiny paper, with tiny stamps, and seals them with an itsy bitsy wax seal with the senders initial pressed into it. And no need to worry if the recipients eye sight isn’t the best, each mini letter comes packaged with a magnifying glass. It’s a good day to send a letter with a little bit of love.

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK on wood

Ed Way and Alexandra Snook are the people behind Wook Woodworking, they have been creating amazing wood furniture and home goods that are to die for. I just got an email from Ed letting me know they have opened a new shop  for their line of one-of-a-kind jewelry, welcom Adorn Natural.  Just like their furniture everything is made by hand with unparalleled care and attention to detail. These unique pendants are made from salvaged wood and are absolutely stunning. While your over there be sure to check out their belt buckles as well, a great addition to your favorite jeans. If you love their works as much as I do be sure to check back next monday when they open up their inspiration file to the world.

AFFORDABLE couture

I really love dresses that  have the ability to turn heads, not necessarily because the woman wearing them looks stunning in them, but for sheer artistic value and craftsmanship. The line from Chrissy Wai Ching is exactly that. A mix of bright colors, jewel tones, and delicate simplicity makes these dresses different from anything I have ever seen. She offers so many different styles there is sure to be one that flatters you. Her bridal line is simply stunning for those who want something beautiful and eclectic for their special day. Wai Ching affordable couture.

ARTIST INSPIRATION with wabisabibrooklyn

Please welcome MaryAnne from Wabisabibrooklyn sharing what inspires her to be creative.

I generally need to physically move to start the engine of inspiration. My number one choice of locomotion is to take long city walks where I pass by so many people it’s slightly dizzying. The unexpected juxtapositions, seeing a bit of the old hanging on amid the new; shopwindows, and eavesdropping all give me just the right motivation to get to work creating.

When I travel farther than just a walk away from my house, I end up paying attention to the little details that remind me I’m far from home, like ancient tiles, prehistoric looking insects, or toys made out of trash.

And no matter where I am, I am always inspired by frugality. I was at the jewelry supply store one day about to pay nine cents each for some small copper circles, when I realized I knew where to get cuter ones for one cent each. Whenever anyone asks how I came up with the idea for the decoupaged penny earring, I always reply, “thrift.”

The sense of time-travel that comes from sifting through a second-hand shop (or a garage if your family is comprised of pack rats, as mine is),  seeing an old movie (right now I’m particularly enamored of the finery of certain choice 1970s flicks), or hearing a song that transports me to another era that is what I need to keep myself filled with creative energy. – MarryAnne Wabisabi Brooklyn

I MISS the sound of birds

Tweet Tweet it’s Friday! I’m just fascinated by the collage work from Kareem Rizk. These bird pieces are just a drop in the bucket of  creativity flowing from this Australian artist. A lot of his work has this very fresh retro vibe that I haven’t seen before. Airplanes, senior portraits, and cars from the 70’s, he incorporates them all with color blocks and scrap paper into very modern works of art. So check out his shop and his site offering original collages, as well as affordable prints.

FROM COLLEGE DORMS to your bag

I love trompe l’oiel, you know when things are painted to look 3 dimensional and real. When I was little i used to call them magic paintings, and I still think there is a bit of magic in them. I was doing some searching last night for some prizes for an upcoming upstatefancy contest, when I came across this little change purse zip pouch from Quiet Doing. Everyone has seen the little pouches that look like cassette tapes, or bananas, but these guys have turned something that you would never throw into your purse, into a very useable vessel. The milk crate has officially come along way from being the essential bookcase and extra seating from your college years. They also have a lot of really cool wallets, purses, and ipod cases so be sure to check them out.

MORE AFFORDABLE art

Trish Trish bo bish, bannanna fanna fo.. Okay enough of the name games, on the serious side, I LOVE Trish Grantham’s work. She has a great sense of color schemes that are playful, without being overbearing. And of course the characters in her illustrations are adorable. The best thing about these paintings is they are affordable paintings, not just prints. So check her out and send her some love from upstatefancy.

SIT DOWN RELAX and check your email.

I’m moving into a new apartment soon and have been dreaming about some new furniture. Eames, Miller, Saarinen, oh how I wish I could afford you all! But in the meantime at least my ibook can now live in the lap of luxury.  At just a fraction of what a real Eames lounger would cost you, your laptop can be safe and secure in one of the embroidered laptop cases from Byrd and Belle. While your over there be sure to check out her embroidered pillows as well, modernize your living room and still have money to pay your bills.

ARTIST INSPIRATION from She’s SO Creative

We have asked some very talented artists, illustrators, designers and crafters to share some things that help inspire them. Each monday stop by an take a sneak peek into the swatch files and bulletin boards of some of your favorite artists. This week’s inspiration board is from Stephanie, the designer, illustrator and wordsmith of She’s So Creative.

Norman Rockwell, Tom Petty, Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, The New Yorker Cartoons, Far Side genius Gary Larson, art deco, gorgeous typography, the Sedona red rocks… I’m inspired by a lot of things, but what really gets me going, what really turns me are those, clever little gems of originality, concepts that are so simple, yet so spot on in communicating whatever the intended message is. Like, donuts in the shape of a cigarette or the descender of the letter “A” mimicking the trunk of an elephant.  I love wit and cheekiness and thinking about things in a different way.  Beautiful patterns are great, fun ideas are cool, but when I see great design beautifully executed combined with conceptually brilliant ideas, that’s the stuff that oozes inspiration for me.

Thanks for letting me share. —Stephanie
